This definitely isn’t all there is to crane safety but here are some basic tips if you are going to be working on a site where you will be in close proximity to cranes.

  • Safety regulations state that all lifts must be reconsidered at 20mph winds & halted at 30mph winds.
  • Never stand or walk under a load.
  • Always wear appropriate safety gear & clothing such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, & long jeans.
  • Always Stay outside of the operating perimeter marked with caution tape and/or cones.
  • Never lean your body or any other items against the crane or its parts.
  • Never put anything on the deck of the crane like rigging, shackles or slings.
  • If you are a tech that is to install something, never try to undo the rigging connected to the crane until the object is safely grounded and secured via attachments like bolts.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Never obstruct the view between the crane operator and the signal person, rigger or load.
  • Never stand near a load as it’s being lifted or set unless you are a trained, employed rigger and have been instructed to guide the load into a designated position (generally with a tag line) AND the site is safe and clear of any hazards.
  • Never approach a person whose machinery has come in contact with power lines. Simply remain far away & call 911. To remove yourself from a position of danger where machinery nearby has come in contact with power lines, put both boots together and keep them together while you hop or shuffle away from the site of danger
  • If a medical emergency occurs, always call 911 and then check to see if the site is safe before proceeding to help if necessary
